Tip of the iceberg—Iran says Netanyahu tried to block Hamas-US deal

Hamas has confirmed direct negotiations with the United States regarding the release of Israeli-American captive Edan Alexander. Israel maintains that the release will proceed without its commitment to a ceasefire. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen amid ongoing military operations.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Iran has claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to block a reported agreement between Hamas and the United States for the release of Israeli-American captive Edan Alexander.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reacted to the news on his X account, writing, “Tip of the iceberg,” in a cryptic post on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Abu Obeida, spokesperson for al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, stated that the movement was preparing to release Alexander following a reported deal with the US, which allegedly excluded Israeli involvement.

Alexander, 21, has been held captive in Gaza since October 7, 2023, when Hamas fighters launched their operation against Israeli forces in occupied Palestinian territories.

On Sunday, Hamas announced that Alexander’s release would be part of efforts toward a ceasefire, the opening of Gaza’s crossings, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Israel, however, has denied committing to any ceasefire in connection with Alexander’s release. Officials stated that a "safe corridor" would be established to facilitate the transfer but clarified that military operations in Gaza would continue.

The Israeli government has also refused any broader prisoner exchange following its termination of a ceasefire deal with Hamas in January. The agreement had collapsed after Israeli forces intensified their assaults on Gaza.

Netanyahu confirmed on Sunday that Israel had permitted a safe passage for Alexander but emphasized that military aggression in Gaza would persist.

Reports indicate that US officials, including regional envoy Steve Witkoff, are preparing to oversee the process of Alexander’s release.
